Chronic and Metabolic Rehabilitation
Chronic conditions include heart disease, respiratory disorders, high blood pressure, arthritis, osteoporosis etc. and metabolic conditions include diabetes, obesity, etc.
As exercise has proven to improve and help manage these conditions, Roné Grobbelaar Biokineticist clinically assesses clients with chronic disease and works with each to create an effective treatment plan to help manage the disease.
Orthopedic Rehabilitation
Orthopaedic conditions entail all disturbances with the musculoskeletal system, which hampers the optimal quality of life. This includes the bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons.
Injury prevention
A biokineticist will do a functional screening to identify any factors that might place you at risk of obtaining an injury. This is not only to prepare someone for a competitive sport event such as the Comrades or a tournament but also to ensure an individual will not be at risk while doing general activities such as jogging every now and then or going for a hike. A biokineticist can prescribe an exercise regime to address any factors that might place you at risk.
Pre- and Post-operative rehabilitation
If you have an upcoming surgery, a structured exercise program beforehand can help you to recover quicker and easier from the procedure. It is also important to get rehabilitation after an operation to ensure the involved muscles are strong and flexible enough to support the structure that was operated on as well as to improve your ability to function optimally in daily life.
Final phase Injury rehabilitation
When you have suffered an injury that prevents you from optimizing your quality of life, it is the biokineticist’s job to help you get to where you want to be, by prescribing scientifically based exercise.
These types of injury can include any musculoskeletal structure and can be an acute condition (an identifiable event i.e. you twisted your ankle) or chronic (gradually occurs over time i.e. ITB syndrome or tennis elbow) condition .
Neurological Rehabilitation
Research has shown that exercise can have a major impact on the nervous system. The main aim for neurological rehabilitation will be to improve the physical impact and to slow the progression of the disease through focused exercise.
- Stroke
- Parkinson’s disease
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Multiple sclerosis
- Spinal cord injury
Special Populations’ Rehabilitation
Elderly
Frailty is a normal occurrence with aging, but there are ways to combat this through exercise. A biokineticist will prescribe an exercise program to build and maintain muscle strength to indirectly strengthen bones and slow the frailty process.
Children specific
Children and adolescents often experience developmental problems that can be addressed with exercise. Some young individuals experience an extensive growth spurt, which means additional exercise is necessary to stretch and strengthen the surrounding structures that support the fast growing bones. Teenage athletes may also need focused exercise programs to improve any factors that might place them at risk of sport injuries. Additionally, a biokineticist can assist in physical rehabilitation of childhood diseases or conditions such as cerebral palsy, obesity, spina bifida, etc.
Pregnancy
It is very important to adapt your exercise routine during the different trimesters of pregnancy to ensure you do not place you or your unborn baby at risk. A biokineticist will provide professional assessment and prescription of safe exercise programs for woman during their whole pregnancy to ensure they stay conditioned with all the bodily changes they undergo during the pre- and post-natal phases.
General Well-Being
A biokineticist can assist you if you would like to improve any of the following through exercise:
Sedentary lifestyle & Weight management
It is well known that a sedentary lifestyle (doing no or very little activity) is associated with a high risk for developing conditions such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, etc. Doing exercise forms part of living a healthy lifestyle by aiding in weight management and decreasing your risk for lifestyle disease.
Physical conditioning
Having low muscle tone can predispose individuals of all ages to injuries, however this can be combated through exercise that strengthens the musculo-skeletal system. It is important to be able to do daily household activities and hobbies in a safe and injury risk-free way – this possible through a prescribed exercise regime.
Sports conditioning
Training all movement systems that are used in sport can assist you to be more effective in your movements and therefore also better at your sport.
Corporate wellness
In a corporate setting, intervention strategies to improve personal and employee wellness, through individualized assessment of health risk factors, and prescription of appropriate exercise programs are important.
Posture
Having good posture does not only give you more confidence, but it places your musculoskeletal system in the best position to function optimally and thereby also reduces your risk of obtaining an injury. Correct postural alignment can be achieved through corrective exercise techniques.
